The Pilgrim's Mass at the San Francisco Church

The San Francisco Church or Iglesia de San Francisco is the site, during restorations on the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, of the 'Miso Del Peregrino' or Pilgrim Mass.  The traditional pilgrim mass begins at noon everyday.  It acknowledges and honours pilgrims that have made the trek.

The only Mass, in English, is in the Chapel of the Pilgrim Office every day at 9:30 am.

Below is the clergy heading to mass....don't want to be late.

Deb lighting a candle for friends and family.

At the beginning of the mass, a list of all the Pilgrim's, that have arrived within the last 24 hours, is read aloud.  It states where the pilgrim came from and where their pilgrimage began.

(Below)
Unfortunately, we did not reach the mass on our arrival date.
But we did attend on another occasion where I did receive communion.
That's me with the clergy, receiving the sacrament...kind of blurry, but it is dark in the very old churches.

This sculpture of the Last Supper, I found tucked quietly at the end of the long nave of the church.

The Apostle of Saint James...distinguished by the gourd on a cane that he carries.

The beginning, of this church and convent, 'The Convent of San Francisco de Valdedios,' was in the 12th Century when it was founded by Saint Francis of Assisi during his visit in 1214.
The convent is now a hotel and closed to visitors.  However the church that stands today was built in the 17th Century.
The arch ways are glorious.

Located in a very old part of the city.  Cafes and restaurants and many tourist shops.

The monument to Saint Francis of Assisi in front of the San Francisco church.
An exquisite church that offers a lovely service to all.

Note:  The Santiago de Compostela Cathedral is due to be reopened in the Holy Year of 2021.
